Dolly-Parton

Dolly Parton, born Jan. 19, 1946 in Locust Ridge Tenn. to 12 hungry kids who would grow with them eventually. She learned early how to get out of the difficulties she faced by using her rich and vivid imagination. Before she learned to write or read, she had already composed her own music. Once she had her first guitar at the age of 8, she began performing on local radio stations from Knoxville, Tennessee. That same year she made her first record on Gold Band Records a tiny independent label. She made a name for herself locally while still in high school but she always dreamed of having a bigger stage. She moved to Nashville following her graduation in 1964. Dumb Blonde (1967) and Something Fishy (1968) were the first two albums to chart for Monument Records. Porter Wagoner, a syndicated show on TV at the time, was in search for a singer for his show. Parton took the offer in 1967 signed to RCA Records in 1968 and was a part of the Grand Ole Opry in 1969. Then, in 1974, she left Wagoner's Show because the success of her own songs such as Joshua Coats of Many Colors or Jolene was surpassing their joint albums. After their split, Parton wrote the song I Will Always Love You for Wagoner and it climbed to Number. 1. for the first time in 1974.
